The Philosophy of Peace in Contemporary Western Thought: Sartre and Russell as Models

Violence constitutes the negative dimension of political life, as argued by Jean-Paul Sartre. From Sartre's existentialist perspective, existence implies active engagement with the world and the continuous formation of the self through lived experience. Accordingly, the dismantling of colonialism is an ethical and existential necessity grounded in freedom and responsibility. Genuine peace cannot be achieved without liberating people from oppression and domination. Sartre maintains that deconstructing colonial structures, which negate the humanity of the colonized, is essential for responsible liberation and the establishment of a just global peace that restores human dignity.
In contrast, Bertrand Russell focuses on the obstacles to world peace as fundamental challenges to political practice. He examines the relationship between individual and collective freedom and the difficulties of maintaining international peace under political power and institutional authority. Russell warns against excessive state power at the expense of individual liberty and advocates diplomacy and dialogue as alternatives to military confrontation. For Russell, balancing political authority and individual freedom is the foundation for lasting global stability.
