The pragmatics of silence and the aesthetics of the unspoken in Abbasid prose (A study in the literature of messages and shrines)

This study examines the phenomenon of "silence" as a pragmatic and aesthetic structure in Abbasid prose, focusing on the epistolary art and maqamat as literary genres most consciously aware of strategically employing the unsaid. The research adopts a pragmatic analytical methodology drawing upon Speech Act Theory (Austin, Searle), Implicature (Grice), and gaps theory (Iser), alongside classical Arab rhetorical concepts such as omission, brevity, and deflection. The findings reveal that silence in Al-Jahiz's letters evolved into a tool for political and social dissimulation, while Al-Hamadhani's and Al-Hariri's maqamat disclose advanced pragmatic strategies including "temporary silence," "topic shifting," and "hesitation" (al-ihtimal), enabling the maqama protagonist to survive and deceive. Statistical analysis demonstrates a functional integration between "temporary silence" and "hesitation" (r = 0.45), alongside a predominance of political silence (35%) followed by aesthetic silence (28%) within the study sample. The research concludes that Abbasid prose anticipated modern pragmatic theories in establishing a rhetoric of the unsaid, necessitating a re-reading of Arab heritage through contemporary linguistic frameworks.
