Convincing emotions and their relationship to professional stress among educational counselors

The present study aims to identify alexithymia among educational counselors and to examine the statistical significance of differences according to gender and age. It also seeks to determine the level of occupational stress and the significance of differences based on the same variables, as well as to explore the nature of the relationship between alexithymia and occupational stress. To achieve these objectives, the Alexithymia Scale developed by Chung et al. (2003), consisting of 20 items across three dimensions—difficulty identifying feelings, difficulty describing feelings, and externally oriented thinking—was employed. Additionally, a 20-item occupational stress scale was developed. The instruments were administered to a sample of 166 male and female counselors during the 2025–2026 academic year. Results indicated that counselors exhibit alexithymic tendencies in emotional work situations and experience occupational stress, with no significant differences by gender or age, and a positive correlation between the two variables.
