The sayings of Ya'qub ibn Ishaq ibn al-Sikkit (d. 244 AH) in the works of Abu al-Hasan ibn Sidah (d. 458 AH): Criticism and comparison

This research examines the sources relied upon by Ibn Sida in his works, focusing specifically on Ibn al-Sikkit. The study compares Ibn Sida’s citations with the original accounts found in Ibn al-Sikkit’s books, such as “Al-Alfaz and Islah al-Mantiq”. It evaluates his accuracy in quoting—noting any additions or omissions—and analyzes his critical approach to selecting the most correct terms and attributing names.
Furthermore, the paper highlights inconsistencies between Ibn Sida’s two major works, “Al-Mukhassas and Al-Muhkam “ and “Al-Muhit al-A'zam," where he occasionally accepts an opinion in one while rejecting the same opinion in the other. It also explores how these errors influenced later dictionaries that accepted Ibn Sida’s accounts uncritically without verifying them against original sources.
The findings reveal that Ibn Sida was sometimes inaccurate in his judgments; he occasionally criticized Ibn al-Sikkit based on misconceptions or cited him without sufficient precision.
