The Symbolic Environment in the Poetry of Fadwa Tuqan: An Analytical Study of Imagery and Significations

The environment in the poetry of Fadwa Tuqan transcends its traditional descriptive function to become a powerful medium for expressing human and psychological experiences. It reflects an inner emotional state characterized by a blend of sorrow, hope, and solitude, while simultaneously carrying profound national symbolism that embodies the land and Palestinian cities as representations of identity, belonging, and struggle. The environment also emerges as a mirror of social relations and societal transformations, granting environmental symbols multiple interpretive dimensions and enabling the reader to engage deeply with the text and continuously derive new meanings. Tuqan relies on environmental imagery to enhance artistic expression through devices such as simile, metaphor, and personification, thereby enriching her poetry with semantic depth and stylistic dynamism. Consequently, the environment in her poetic texts becomes a vital and autonomous element within the creative structure, rather than merely serving as a secondary backdrop.
