Selections from the Effect of Instrument Substitution in the Diwan of Abu al-Hasan ʿAli ibn Rustam al-Saʿātī (d. 604 AH): A Grammatical Study

The issue of substitution (niyābah) constitutes one of the fundamental topics in Arabic grammar, as it elucidates the nature of the relationship between lexical items and meanings on the one hand, and highlights the phenomenon of semantic extension and expansion on the other. Moreover, this topic offers a significant benefit in reducing repetition through the use of a particular particle or instrument that substitutes, in meaning, for another. Such substitution inevitably leaves an effect on any text or context to which the instrument belongs. Grammarians have differed regarding the acceptance of substitution: some rejected it and considered it anomalous, while others acknowledged it, albeit under specific conditions. The researcher adopted a descriptive–analytical approach in conducting this study.
