This research constitutes a discourse on "discourse on silence," aiming to review researchers' approaches to silence and muteness. Its title combines the duality of silence and speech, as linguistics works with signs as material, and silence is not exempt from this definition. It represents a reluctance to produce signs within the contexts of their production, and this reluctance constitutes a specific rhetorical method that creates a duality of : silence and speech. In its initial approach, the research discusses the problematic boundaries between silence and muteness. It then delves into the origins of silence and muteness in the classical corpus. Finally, it reviews silence in linguistic approaches, arriving at three main perspectives: deconstruction, synthesis, and pragmatics. Throughout, it affirms that silence is a distinct and independent form of expression, and it is separated from other rhetorical phenomena.
