Representations of Liquid Modernity in the Iraqi Novel “After 2003: Selected Models”

This study argues that the novel constitutes a privileged literary form for representing cultural references and registering the dynamics of social reality and its transformations. Grounded in a realistic referential horizon, the novel absorbs the pressures of historical and cultural change and rearticulates them through narrative organization, dialogue, and description.Within a cultural context increasingly defined by fluidity—where certainty, identity, and value systems are continually unsettled—the Iraqi novel has internalized this condition and transformed it into a governing narrative principle. This fluidity is manifested thematically through the disruption of stable value structures and formally through the flexibilization of narrative patterns.Such strategies reveal the Iraqi novel’s deep engagement with its cultural context and its acute responsiveness to the contemporary crisis of meaning and the erosion of certainty. By destabilizing inherited representational systems, the Iraqi novel moves beyond descriptive realism to crystallize a critical narrative consciousness of liquid modernity today globally.
