Abstract

This study aims to analyze rhetorical contradiction in ancient Arabic inscriptions, focusing on its pragmatic and argumentative functions within written discourse. The research examines Nabataean, Thamudic, Safaitic, and Lihyanite inscriptions, identifying the patterns of rhetorical contradiction and their impact on the audience within various cultural and political contexts.

Findings indicate that rhetorical contradiction was not merely a stylistic device but a tool for redefining concepts, enhancing persuasion, and legitimizing political and religious authority. It was also employed to stimulate critical thinking and reshape social values.

Furthermore, the study highlights the role of philosophical contradiction in shaping Arab perspectives on life and death, strength and weakness, knowledge and ignorance, reflecting a deeply rooted philosophical inclination in pre-Islamic Arab culture. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of how ancient Arabs used rhetorical contradiction as a linguistic tool with broad social and intellectual influence.
