The Ongoing Conflict Between Alawi Ethics and Umayyad Ethics”(analytical study)

This article examines the ethical transformation in early Islamic history during the rise of the Umayyads, showing that it was not only a political shift but also a conflict between two different moral systems. The Umayyad system relied on power, deception, and separating religion from governance, while the ʿAlid system was based on justice, piety, and linking ethics with leadership, as seen in the teachings of the Prophet and Imam ʿAlī. The article draws on classical sources such as al-Imāma wa al-Siyāsa and Nahj al-Balāgha, along with modern studies on ethical systems. It concludes that this struggle between “power without ethics” and “ethics guiding power” remains present in Islamic consciousness and continues to shape the moral identity of the Muslim community.
