The manifestations of divine love in the poetry of forgotten Sufis: A study of the Diwan of Ibrahim Al-Dasuqi

This study examines the manifestations of divine love in the poetry of the Sufi Ibrahim Al-Dusuqi, one of the prominent Moroccan Sufi figures unjustly forgotten by history. Al-Dusuqi’s Diwan presents a distinctive model of Sufi poetry that embodies divine love not as an abstract concept, but as an existential experience in which the self dissolves into the Absolute. Grounded in the vision of the Unity of Being (Wahdat al-Wujud), the universe appears as a mirror reflecting Divine beauty, while love functions as both the driving force and ultimate aim, seeking union and annihilation in the Beloved. Beyond expressing longing and the pain of separation, the poet depicts states of Sufi intoxication (sukr), where senses and meanings merge and the lover vanishes in the presence of the Beloved. Using simple yet suggestive language rich in classical Sufi symbols such as wine, fate, and moaning, Al-Dusuqi portrays a spiritual journey from poverty and self-deprivation to ecstatic union, making his Diwan a testament to popular Sufism and experiential knowledge of the Divine essence.
