The Dialectic of Self and Other in the Assertion of Identity in Al-Kafira (The Infidel): A Descriptive, Analytical, and Psychological Study

This study examines the Iraqi novelist Ali Bader’s Al-Kafira (The Infidel) as a narrative that reflects the crisis of identity and the fragmentation of the self within societies dominated by oppression, excommunication, and both symbolic and physical violence. The analysis focuses on the central female character (Fatima/Sophie) within a psychological and sociological framework, drawing on psychoanalytic methodology to explore the dialectics of self and other in the formation of individual identity across closed and open environments. The study highlights how abused childhood, poverty, and religious extremism contribute to producing unstable selves marked by alienation and psychological fragility. It further investigates the complex relationship between body and memory, exile, and love as a compensatory force of healing. Through a narrative mode shaped by dreams and free association, the text becomes an act of resistance, enabling the heroine to reclaim her existence and reconfigure her identity against patriarchal authority and harsh social realities.
