This study examines the title of The Corpse Exhibition by Hassan Blasim through the lens of semiotic analysis. The choice of the title serves as both a representation and a description of the period depicted in the novel, reflecting the lived reality shaped by political, cultural, social, and civilizational conflicts. The novel incorporates multiple titles that contribute to shaping the reader's expectations and guiding semiotic interpretations, positioning the title itself as a literary phenomenon and a textual entity.
What distinguishes the title is its semiological sign, as it appears at the beginning of the text and carries a referential function. Through engaging with the text and interacting with its artistic and aesthetic meanings, the title serves as a key to unlocking its mysteries. This study explores the functions of the title and its significance as a threshold to the text. It particularly highlights the semiotic functions of the title, which play a crucial role in the emergence of a literary work. These functions include the descriptive function, the referential function, the persuasive function, and the implicit function. This research aims to analyze the title as a textual threshold and interpret the relationship between the title and its functions.
