Socrates is considered one of the most prominent philosophers who influenced educational thought, offering profound insights into the teaching and learning process. He believed that education was not merely the transmission of knowledge, but rather a process of intellectual enlightenment requiring critical thinking and personal inquiry. Socrates relied on dialogue as a primary teaching method, posing questions that prompted his students to reflect on their own ideas and beliefs. The importance of self-education is clearly evident in Socrates' philosophy, as he believed that individuals should continuously strive for self-knowledge and understanding of truth through contemplation and inquiry. For example, he encouraged his students to ask, "What is truth?" and "What is justice?" This helped them explore profound ethical concepts independently, rather than accepting them as pre-established truths.
