Modernity is not merely an importation of Western models or a break with the past, but rather a process of transcending and developing the Arab and Islamic heritage. The critic seeks to build an authentic Arab modernity that stems from a rational critique of heritage and ethics and benefits from the methodological and epistemological gains of Western modernity while preserving the specific Arab identity.
