Dark Imagery and Its Aesthetic Value in the Poetry of Abu al-Ala al-Ma’arri

The dark imagery in Al-Ma'arri's poetry is one of the most prominent features of his poetic and philosophical experience. Through it, he expresses his despair of life, the bitterness of reality, and his sense of loss and absurdity. Despite its sad tone, these images possess a high artistic beauty, characterized by depth and sincerity, provoking reflection on the meanings of existence and non-existence. The aesthetic value of the dark imagery lies in its ability to convey genuine human emotions and in its use of rhetorical and poetic images that enhance its emotional and artistic impact. This makes Al-Ma'arri's poetry a source of inspiration and contemplation of the darker aspects of human life, granting it a unique philosophical and aesthetic depth.
