The Vocabulary of Water in the Poetry of Labid ibn Rabiah

Abstract

The Arabs lived in a harsh and barren desert environment where water was scarce. As a result, water became central to their daily lives, and this deep importance was strongly reflected in their poetry. In many poems, water appears as a symbol of survival, generosity, fertility and the continuity of life. Because of its vital role, water related vocabulary became especially common in early Arabic poetry particularly in the works of Labid ibn Rabiah. His verses include a rich variety of terms such as al-ghayth (beneficial rain), al-matar (rain), al-sahab (clouds), al-ghamam (dense clouds), al-ribab (rainclouds), al-nada (dew) and al-muzn (rain-bearing clouds). Each term carries a precise meaning that reflects how significant water was in that period.
