The Cultural Influence of the Bani al-Ahmar State on Neighboring Countries

During its Islamic period, al-Andalus experienced persistent conflict with the Christian kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula, a struggle that intensified in the later centuries and contributed to the gradual loss of most Muslim-held cities. Granada remained the final stronghold of Muslim rule. Despite political instability and shrinking territory, the Banu AL-Ahmar succeeded in shaping Granada into a significant cultural and intellectual center whose influence extended to North Africa and Europe. The Alhambra became a distinguished example of Islamic architecture, and its design principles and decorative features were adopted beyond al-Andalus. Granada emerged as an important center of scholarship that attracted leading thinkers and supported translation and writing activities, which facilitated the transmission of scientific and philosophical knowledge to Europe through Latin translations. In addition, Andalusi migrations and Granada’s musical heritage played a central role in shaping social traditions and musical practices in Morocco, Iberia, and parts of Europe.
