The Role of Social Media in Enhancing Public Awareness of Drug-Related Issues

Abstract

The widespread growth of digital technologies, particularly social media platforms, has made them vital tools for information dissemination, education, and public awareness. This study explores the role of social media in raising awareness about the dangers of drug use and evaluates the effectiveness of these platforms in delivering warnings and guidance. Using a descriptive survey method, the research targeted a purposive sample of 84 social media users in Baghdad Governorate. The findings reveal that most respondents use social media daily, highlighting its significance as an information source. Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok were identified as the most commonly used platforms. The results indicate that social media plays a substantial role in educating the public about the harmful consequences of drug use and in enhancing awareness of its risks. The study underscores the importance of leveraging these platforms for preventive communication and awareness campaigns related to drug abus.
