تتضمن نظرية نهاية العالم مجموعة متنوعة من الأفكار المتعلقة بأسباب نهاية العالم. ويعود مفهوم نهاية العالم إلى بعض كتب التراث الديني والمعتقدات، مُحددًا كيف سيكون المستقبل المُحتمل نتيجةً لفقدان الإنسانية. ففي الأدب، يُستخدم مفهوم نهاية العالم لاستكشاف الصراع بين الخير والشر لنقل رسائل أو كشف توقعات خفية عن المستقبل. وتتناول الروايات المختارة ما بعد نهاية العالم؛ وهي قصصٌ من أفواه الناجين كتحذيرٍ للبشرية مما ينتظرهم في المستقبل بسبب سوء استخدام التقدم العلمي.
في هذا الصدد، يُعد موضوع الزومبي نوعًا من مفاهيم ما بعد نهاية العالم، فغالبًا ما تُصوَّر عواقب الانهيار الاجتماعي، والكوارث البيئية، وإساءة استخدام التكنولوجيا، والحرب البيولوجية، والانحلال الأخلاقي؛ على أنها إعادة الحياة للموتى لالتهام الأحياء كنوع من العقاب أو التجديد. ويعد الزومبي في الأصل، مفهوما فولكلوريا موجودا في الثقافة الهايتية، وعادةً ما يظهر بوصفه قلقا وأمراضا ناتجة عن الانهيار الاجتماعي.
أما موضوع ما بعد نهاية العالم, فغير واقعي، كما هو مُصوَّر في رواية "المنطقة الأولى" لكولسون وايتهايد، ورواية "التعفن والخراب" لجوناثان مابيري، وكلاهما رواية خيالية. تُصوِّر هذه الروايات كيف تتغير الطبيعة البشرية مع انهيار الحضارة، وكيف تُكافح من أجل البقاء في عالمٍ مُجرَّد من الإنسانية بسبب ظروفٍ قاسية. عادةً ما يكون الزومبي هو المعتدي, ويأكلون البشر الأحياء، ولكن في بعض الأحيان يُمكن النظر إلى هذا الواقع المُرعب من منظورٍ مختلف، إذ يُمكن عدّهم ضحايا لسوء استخدام التطور في العصر الحديث.
